Hill Cooking in our Apartment
We hopped a two hour flight from Salta to Buenos Aires (pop: 13 million) and taxied over to the trendy Palermo district. Ken’s first reaction: “are we in Westwood?” We’re tired of hotels, so we opted to rent a furnished apartment for a week (“brilliant,” as the English say). I miss having a kitchen; eating out three meals a day sounds appealing but after a month I just want to cook spaghetti. The enjoyment spread across our faces as we perused the grocery store -- simple pleasures are the best! Hmmm... yellow square container in the refrigerated section (butter, maybe?), eggs on the shelf (why aren’t these refrigerated?), powdered substance with a picture of dirty kids (laundry detergent?), and a jar of dulce de leche (this one is easy: a heavenly carmel spread that goes on anything and everything). Our goals for the week (in order of importance): eat lots of steak, see a Tango show, find an elusive gaucho (Argentinian cowboy, shout out Santa Barbara), and maybe take a boat ride to Uruguay (if we’re feeling adventurous and hey, why not?).
